A new chapter begins for Olivia Munn and John Mulaney! The couple recently announced the arrival of their second child, a daughter born via gestational surrogate on September 14.
Munn, 44, shared the joyful news on Instagram on September 22, stating, “Méi June Mulaney came into the world September 14, 2024, the year of the dragon🐉.” The post included a heartwarming photo of her seated on Mulaney’s lap, cradling their newborn in a hospital room.
Reflecting on her journey, she expressed, “I experienced profound emotions regarding my inability to carry my daughter. Meeting our gestational surrogate, we connected as mothers.

In her post, she revealed the purpose of her daughter’s name, writing, “I’m incredibly proud of my little plum, my little dragon, for making this journey to us. My heart has exploded,” adding that “Méi (pronounced may) means plum in Chinese 梅💜.”
Her post featured a close-up of baby Méi, a tender moment of her holding her daughter near a large window, and a family photo of the four of them gazing at the ocean.
John Mulaney also shared his excitement on Instagram, humorously stating, “Méi June Mulaney came into the world September 14, 2024, the year of the dragon🐉. We stole so much stuff from the hospital,” and added, “I love my little girl so much.”
In his post, Mulaney clarified the pronunciation and meaning of their daughter’s name, accompanied by a purple heart, similar to Munn’s message. He included a hospital photo and a funny video of him burping Méi, capturing a candid moment of fatherhood.
Their daughter joins older brother Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney, who was born on November 24, 2021. The couple’s announcement comes just months after their intimate wedding in July, officiated by Munn’s The Newsroom co-star Sam Waterston, with Malcolm and a witness as the only attendees.
Earlier this year, Munn revealed her “terrifying” breast cancer diagnosis, which led to four surgeries, including a double mastectomy and medically induced menopause.
Despite the difficulties she faced, Munn updated fans on September 4, sharing that she was “doing ok” and detailing her cancer journey in a video. She described undergoing various medical procedures since her diagnosis, which included egg retrieval in June 2023 and breast reconstruction in September 2023.
In May, Munn shared with Vogue that she froze her eggs after her diagnosis, allowing her and Mulaney the chance to expand their family in the future, having previously frozen her eggs at 33 and 39. Her September update also mentioned lupron treatment in November 2023, a partial hysterectomy/oophorectomy in April 2024, and arimidex treatment in August 2024.
Throughout her challenges, Munn has focused on her son, finding immense joy in their time together. In April, she told PEOPLE, “When I’m with him, it’s the only time my mind doesn’t dwell on being sick. I’m just so happy with him. It puts everything into perspective. Regardless of changes in my body, I’m still his mom, and that’s what matters most.”
In recent years, Mulaney and Munn have enjoyed documenting Malcolm’s milestones as they embrace parenthood. Their son has already achieved developmental milestones, such as saying his first words, trying new foods, and learning to open doors.
Additionally, he has had unique experiences, from traveling to beautiful locations like Colorado’s Red Rocks Park to visiting Mulaney on the set of Saturday Night Live in New York City.
In April 2023, Munn shared highlights of their travels to Las Vegas, where they joined Mulaney for a series of performances. While celebrating Malcolm’s achievements, Munn has also candidly discussed the challenges of motherhood and her postpartum journey.
Mulaney has expressed his joy about being a new father, recounting on Late Night with Seth Meyers how he celebrated his first Father’s Day with Malcolm, stating, “He got me a plethora of gifts. I had breakfast with him, and now his thing is grabbing the phone and bringing it to his mouth when it’s in selfie mode.”
Recently, Malcolm helped his mother celebrate her 44th birthday in July, with Munn sharing a heartwarming video of him telling her, “Happy birthday Mommy!” and expressing his love.
In August, Munn highlighted a charming similarity between Malcolm and Mulaney when she posted a video of them fidgeting their fingers in the same way while sitting together, captioning it, “It’s the exact same fidget. I can’t.”
