Once again, the supermodel demonstrates why she’s celebrated as the Halloween Queen. On October 31, Klum hosted her 23rd annual Halloween Party at the Hard Rock Hotel New York: The Venue on Music Row, marking a tradition that showcases her flair for the extravagant.
Famed for her over-the-top Halloween costumes, Klum and her husband, Tom, arrived at the event dressed as both female and male versions of E.T. from Steven Spielberg’s 1982 classic, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
While on the red carpet, Klum explained to PEOPLE that she chose to portray E.T. because the character has been “part of most of our lives,” emphasizing her lifelong admiration for the film.
“I kind of thought about the universe in a different way,” she said, adding, “I thought E.T. was so cute and how he was wiggling around and all the moments when E.T. got dressed up with a wig and everything, so I just thought it would be fun to become E.T. and especially to see two,” noting they had begun preparing their costumes since 11 a.m.
As reported by The New York Times, Klum’s costume features a glowing fingertip—a tribute to the beloved film—as well as a motorized headpiece that allows the mouth and eyes to move. Janelle Monáe also embraced the E.T. theme, revealing her version of the costume on Instagram the day before, on October 30.
Earlier in the month, Monáe shared with PEOPLE that her interpretation of the costume had been in the works for several years. “I’ve shared a costume idea with someone’s team and tried to get a price for how much it would cost.
Then I found out that person was going to be that, and I had been planning this costume for two years,” she explained, mentioning at the time that she would be dressing as “an iconic movie character.” Klum indicated that she had completed her final fittings for her costume on Wednesday.
“It’s gonna be very exciting,” Klum expressed in an Instagram video. “Just did my last fitting and it’s gonna be awesome. I hope.” She concluded the video with a playful gesture, blowing a kiss to the camera while saying, “See you all tomorrow.”
On Thursday morning, she posted another video on Instagram to kick off her Halloween celebrations. “Good morning, New York,” she greeted. “It’s finally Halloween. One year in the making, this costume. I’m excited.”
“Happy Halloween 🎃 👻💀👀 Bring it people !!!!! Show us your costumes…,” she wrote in her caption. “I am so excited to see all of your creations. Can’t wait to show you mine. One year in the making 🥳 Wishing everyone a fun time and be safe ❤️.”
The America’s Got Talent judge also shared a video of herself in bed with Kaulitz, asking him if he was ready for the festivities. “Are you ready to do Halloween with me?” she inquired affectionately. “I love you.”
