What happened in episodes 1 and 2?
Emma, along with Ray and the Grace Field children, escape into the forest and head towards civilization, hoping to find their cause supporter named William Minerva by using a pen containing a holographic map that was found by Norman. Using the coded messages in the house textbooks, Ray finds Minerva’s location and figures out that the textbook stories are the ones that are helping them to survive in the long run. They are then chased by a demonic beast, which causes the group to split up, with Emma leading the children and Ray distracting the monster.
Several demons kill the monster, but they go after Ray after he reveals himself to be the highest-scoring child of the house and lies that the children are dead. He manages to escape when someone on horseback named Sonju rescues him while Emma and the children are met by a human woman who takes them to the sanctuary. Later, both Emma and Ray realize that the woman and Sonju are from the same group and that they are both demons.

They later confront Sonju and the female demon Mujika, only to find out that all the children are alive and well and are inside the caves. Sonju and Mujika reassure the two that they are not like other demons, and they don’t need to eat humans in order to survive and that they are freelancers who are not associated with the Houses. Sonju then tells Emma about the history of their world. For years, there was a war between humans and demons, which eventually ended with them making peace and living their own separate worlds, the demon world and the human world.
The children then prepare to leave, and Sonju and Mujika train them to survive in the wilderness. Gilda then confronts Emma and tells her to stop hiding her own problems from her and to be more open about her’s and Ray’s plans to the children. Emma then goes hunting with Sonju as he teaches her to kill animals with the help of a vampiric plant known as Gupna, which drains blood. A stressed-out Emma returns, and the children ask her what happened. She simply answers with, “I am okay.”
