A new poll is sounding alarms for Republicans eyeing victory in North Carolina’s gubernatorial race, a state carried by former President Donald Trump in 2020.
The upcoming election will feature Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein facing off against Republican Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson. Despite North Carolina’s historical leanings and Trump’s previous success there, recent polls indicate a potential setback for the Republican candidate.
Robinson’s campaign has faced challenges due to controversies surrounding his statements on cultural and social issues. His remarks on topics like reparations for Black Americans and LGBTQ+ rights have drawn criticism and impacted his public image.

A recent Quinnipiac University poll showed Stein leading Robinson by 8 percentage points, with 52 percent of respondents favoring Stein compared to 44 percent for Robinson.
Steven Greene, a political science professor at North Carolina State University, highlighted Robinson’s socially conservative positions as a hindrance to his candidacy. Greene noted that such positions may not resonate well in a statewide election and could be exploited by opponents during the campaign.
Being so, Stein is seen as a strong candidate with mainstream Democratic credentials, having previously served as the state’s attorney general. His experience and centrist appeal could be advantageous in attracting a broader base of voters.
The issues shaping the North Carolina race mirror national concerns, including the economy, immigration, and abortion rights. Abortion, in particular, has gained prominence, with Robinson taking a staunch anti-abortion stance. This stance and his conservative views could play a major role in shaping voter preferences.
