Former “American Idol” participant David Archuleta publicly revealed that he was a member of the LGBTQ community a year ago. One day before his one-year coming out celebration on Saturday, June 11, Archuleta uploaded an Instagram post to commemorate the event. He wrote a detailed reflection on his life before coming out and the past year since disclosing his sexual orientation in the post’s description.
When asked why he chose to come out during Pride Month last year, the 31-year-old said that everything was flowing naturally for him as the events before his coming out days made him aware of who he really is and what he wanted with his life; he said it after ending his engagement with his ex-girlfriend. The singer said that he no longer wished to be hidden under the closet; it was very stressful for him. He further added that running away is usually not the best course of action.

Archuleta, a member of the Church of Latter-day Saints, was raised to oppose same-sex relationships. He acknowledged that, at first, he was reluctant to accept that he had a thing for guys. The American Idol contestant has disclosed that he struggled with repressed guilt regarding his sexuality, which led to the breakdown of three engagements, all of which were with women. No matter how hard he tried, he thought that it was not the best thing for him to marry a female, and he even said that his prior girlfriends would say that their relationships with him were challenging.
The singer stated that three women in his life, including his former fiancée, were close to becoming his wife, but that he always felt that something was missing and that he wasn’t being entirely honest with himself or the women. The performer claimed that as he opened up about his coming-out story during a recent gig in Delta, a town southwest of Salt Lake City, scores of guests left the show. He shared a distressing email his boss had sent, saying that his final 15-minute address had destroyed the “wonderful experience” of the Christmas show, on Instagram and Facebook on Thursday.
As of 2022, Archuleta is not dating anyone. He said that he had now begun dating men. However, he would not say whether or not he was already taken.
