Michelle met Barack Obama during her days with Sidley Austin. Besides working for one of the most prestigious law firms in the world, she also worked for nonprofits and also served as the associate dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago.

Michelle has worked for many ventures. She once also worked as the vice president for Community and External Affairs of the University of Chicago Medical Center before she married Barack Obama in 1992 on October 3. Michelle helped her husband a lot during his presidential bid in 2007 and 2008.

In the year 2008, at an American talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Michelle said that they both didn’t have any plans of having more kids. Before having Malia and Sasha, Michelle had miscarriages and used IVF to conceive them. Those miscarriages had left them broken and failed.

Michelle said that they were trying to get pregnant, and it was not going well. They had one pregnancy test come back positive, which caused them both to forget every worry and swoon with joy but a couple of weeks later, she had a miscarriage which left her physically uncomfortable and cratered any optimism they felt.

By the time Michelle reached her mid-thirties, she had realized that her biological clock was real and egg production was also limited, so they had to go for IVF. Michelle wasn’t the only one who went for IVF to conceive. Senator Tammy Duckworth also shared her miscarriage and IVF story the same week Michelle did, followed by Beyonce and Chrissy Teigen, and Khloe Kardashian. In the same week, Gabrielle Union and her husband, Dwayne Wade, shared with the public that they had their baby through surrogacy.

Michelle shared this news around the launching of her book Becoming. Through her book, she tried to normalize miscarriages and use other ways to conceive a baby. At that time, Michelle became a voice for those parents who were dealing with the problems of infertility and trying to open up.
