Dean McDermott is shedding light on the various factors that led to his separation from Tori Spelling. In his first public statement since announcing their split, the 56-year-old Canadian actor revealed to the Daily Mail that longstanding issues had plagued their relationship, exacerbated by a significant shift in their sleeping arrangements.
According to McDermott, the problems intensified when Spelling, 50, allegedly introduced animals, including a pig and multiple dogs, into their bedroom. He noted that a chicken even resided in their bathroom. The actor explained that constant accidents with the dogs became a breaking point for him, leading him to create a boundary by moving to a different room. Despite the challenges, he claimed there were no efforts to address and resolve the issues that kept him away from their shared sleeping space.
As the couple grew more distant, McDermott admitted that his ongoing struggles with substance abuse resurfaced. Simultaneously, Spelling focused most of her time on their five children: daughters Stella Doreen and Hattie Margaret, as well as sons Liam Aaron, Finn Davey, and Beau Dean.
The couple’s physical and emotional distance intensified, leading McDermott to feel increasingly isolated. He compared their situation to being roommates, rarely sharing meals, and lacking connection or intimacy. McDermott emphasized the importance of the marital bed as the “docking station” for a relationship, where couples connect, share, and build intimacy. With the loss of this connection, he believed their relationship suffered significantly.
Despite the challenges, McDermott took responsibility for his role in the breakdown of their 18-year marriage. He acknowledged that his struggles with addiction made him difficult to live with, expressing remorse for dismantling something that was once beautiful.
McDermott officially announced the split in June, emphasizing their decision to embark on separate journeys. He pledged to continue working together with Spelling as loving parents for the well-being of their children, requesting privacy and thanking their supporters. Both McDermott and Spelling have since been seen moving on, and each has been spotted sharing affection with new partners.
