Through her latest hair transformation experience, Jennifer Love Hewitt learned a vital lesson about the difficulties of aging in Hollywood. On the Inside of You podcast, the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” actor offered her thoughts and revealed the surprising response she received from fans after sharing a filter-added shot.
When getting her hair done at a salon, the 44-year-old actress made the decision to use a filter without applying any makeup. She had no idea how bad things would go on social media. Many remarked on how unfamiliar she looked, implying that she had turned to filters to cover up the apparent age issues.
Thinking back on the event, Hewitt acknowledged that growing older in Hollywood is a difficult trip when one feels as if they can never do anything right and expressed shock at the attention. She first tried to make light of the issue by uploading pictures of herself with what she dubbed “over the top” facial filters in reaction to the criticism.
She attempted to downplay the situation, but her lighthearted approach only served to amplify the negative attention. In September, she posted the following caption to her Instagram photos: “So many people said I look different. I look the same as always. It couldn’t look more natural… Filters don’t charge you that much.”
The former Ghost Whisperer star recalled the fallout when others questioned her necessity to stand up for herself. Hewitt said that she recognized she “can do no right” in the eyes of others, feeling trapped in a no-win scenario.
Hewitt addressed the idea that public feedback has no effect on celebrities by being open about the fact that, despite her want to avoid the trolls, she does pay attention to what others have to say. This encounter serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the difficulties that come with negotiating public opinion, particularly in a profession that sometimes places a premium on youth and attractiveness. As she put it, “To pretend that we don’t is a lie.”
