The Biden Administration Contemplates Executive Measures to Discourage Illegal Migration Along the Southern Border

The Biden administration is considering executive action to deter illegal migration at the southern border

The Biden administration is contemplating executive action aimed at curbing illegal migration along the southern border, as indicated by two U.S. officials.

With prospects for passing border security legislation in Congress appearing dim, these deliberations suggest a proactive stance from the White House to address potential surges in border crossings, which have notably decreased in the past month but are anticipated to rise again.

According to the officials, these plans have been under consideration for months. In December, as Congress was poised to adjourn for the holidays without a resolution on border issues, illegal crossings at the southwest border reached record levels, exceeding 10,000 per day.

While the proposed unilateral measures may encounter resistance from some progressive lawmakers, the officials mentioned that Democratic mayors, who have sought increased federal assistance to manage migrant inflows in their cities, would likely view such actions favorably. However, the specifics of these measures are still in the drafting stage and are not expected to be implemented in the near term.

Meanwhile, Senate Republicans recently blocked a bipartisan border bill that had been negotiated over several months with Democrats and the Biden administration.

A White House spokesperson expressed disappointment, emphasizing the administration’s efforts to negotiate a bipartisan border security bill, which they believe is crucial for significant policy reforms and additional funding to enhance border security.

Despite any perceived enhancements to immigration enforcement from potential executive actions, the officials underscored that such measures would pale in comparison to the impact of a passed border security bill. They emphasized the necessity of taking action, stating that doing nothing is not an option.

President Biden, in advocating for the bipartisan bill, highlighted its potential to address shortcomings in the immigration system. However, facing criticism, including from within his own party, over his border policies, Biden plans to use the Republican opposition to the bipartisan bill as evidence of political motives obstructing problem-solving efforts.

Nevertheless, Biden’s handling of the border remains a contentious issue, with recent polling indicating significant public concern. Despite previous unilateral actions by the administration aimed at mitigating migrant flows, challenges persist, particularly regarding the release of apprehended migrants into the U.S. due to overwhelming numbers.
