House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green has declared that he won’t seek reelection for his congressional seat following the House’s vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Green, a Republican from Tennessee, stated that he had accomplished his promises, particularly in passing legislation for border security and holding Secretary Mayorkas accountable. With the passage of H.R. 2 and the impeachment of Mayorkas, Green believes it’s time for him to return home.

In an interview with CNN, Green highlighted the passage of H.R. 2, a border security bill that cleared the GOP-majority House but faces challenges in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

He also emphasized his role in leading the House Republican impeachment of Mayorkas, stating that he sought to hold the administration accountable.

Green’s decision to retire aligns with a broader trend of prominent House Republican lawmakers, including GOP committee chairs, announcing their departure.

When asked about the state of the House Republican Conference, Green attributed any dysfunction to the slim majority, expressing the need to win more seats for a stronger majority.

There are indications that Green may be considering a run for governor of Tennessee, with sources suggesting his interest. The Republican Tennessee Governor Bill Lee’s term concludes in 2027.

Green mentioned in his announcement that he realizes the fight is not within Washington but with Washington, and he plans to continue serving the country in a new capacity.
