In the ongoing Republican presidential primary season, where some GOP leaders, including former President Donald Trump, have referred to Jan. 6 defendants as “hostages” and endorsed conspiracy theories about the Capitol attack, federal judges in Washington, D.C., have played a crucial role in countering baseless claims.

Judges in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia are actively pushing back against conspiracy theories propagated by some Jan. 6 defendants and their supporters.

In recent hearings, judges have vehemently rejected false claims about the events of Jan. 6, 2021, and have responded firmly to defendants and political figures promoting misinformation about the attack.

The judges overseeing more than 1,200 Capitol riot prosecutions have intensified their denunciations of efforts to distort the history of the Capitol attack, particularly as Donald Trump seeks to return to the White House.

One prominent example is Judge Royce Lamberth, who, during a sentencing hearing for Capitol siege defendant James Little, delivered a scathing rebuke of falsehoods surrounding Jan. 6 and those involved.

Lamberth expressed concern about the distortion of facts and falsehoods becoming mainstream, emphasizing the danger it poses to the country.

The judges’ efforts are aimed at countering misinformation and upholding the rule of law amid attempts to rewrite the narrative about the Capitol attack.
