Senator Tim Scott, a Republican from South Carolina, dismissed questions about former President Donald Trump’s legal issues, stating that “the American people are more focused on their future than Donald Trump’s past.”
During an appearance on “Face the Nation,” Scott highlighted issues such as border security and the economy as the primary concerns for Americans. He sidestepped questions regarding Trump’s recent legal challenges, including a $354 million fine imposed by a New York judge overseeing a civil fraud case.
Trump, currently facing criminal charges in multiple cases, remains a leading contender for the GOP presidential nomination. The former president and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley are set to compete in South Carolina’s Republican primary on Feb. 24.

Scott, who endorsed Trump last month, is considered among potential running mates for Trump in the 2024 election. When questioned about the vice president’s role in Congress’ counting of Electoral College votes after a presidential election, Scott stated that “the Constitution is very clear” but did not provide further details.
He predicted that Trump would be successful in the 2024 election, avoiding a situation similar to the one on Jan. 6, 2021, when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol following Vice President Mike Pence’s refusal to reject Electoral College votes.
Scott defended his decision to endorse Trump over Haley, despite criticism from Haley’s son, who referred to Scott as “Senator Judas.” Scott attributed such reactions to the intensity of political races, stating that “politics makes people and their families desperate.” He suggested that Haley is facing a significant challenge in her home state and other contests.
