Republican businessman Eric Hovde has declared his candidacy for the Senate in Wisconsin, aiming to challenge Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin.

In his announcement, Hovde highlighted the pressing challenges facing the nation, including the economy, healthcare, crime, and border security, emphasizing the need for unity and practical solutions to address these issues.

This marks Hovde’s second Senate bid, having previously lost the GOP primary in 2012 to former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, who was later defeated by Baldwin in the general election.

Hovde, the CEO of multiple companies including Hovde Properties and H Bancorp, has garnered support from National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Steve Daines, who views him as a strong candidate capable of funding his own campaign.

Baldwin, seeking her third term, faces a challenging reelection in a state that has historically seen tight electoral margins. Wisconsin, a battleground state, has swung narrowly in recent presidential elections, making it a crucial target for both parties.

Republicans see Baldwin’s seat as an opportunity to bolster their chances of regaining control of the Senate in the upcoming November elections. In a landscape where control of the Senate hangs in the balance, Hovde emerges as a prominent figure in the Republican primary.

While other potential candidates like Reps. Mike Gallagher and Tom Tiffany have opted out of the Senate race, businessman Scott Mayer and former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke are still considering bids. As the primary season unfolds, Hovde’s candidacy adds to the dynamic political landscape of Wisconsin’s senatorial race.
