Jaskirat Kaur, who is facing charges of murdering her 10-year-old daughter, Shay Kang, appeared before a Crown Court judge via a prison video-link. The hearing occurred at Wolverhampton Crown Court, where Kaur was remanded in custody.
The 33-year-old, also known as Jasmine Kang, was arrested after the police found Shay’s body at their home in Rowley Regis, West Midlands. The discovery occurred around 12:10 pm on Monday, prompting the authorities to take Kaur into custody.
During the court appearance, Kaur, wearing a grey top and seated behind a desk, did not enter any plea to the murder charge. Her defense barrister, Oliver Woolhouse, made submissions on her behalf.
Judge Michael Chambers KC informed Kaur that she would need to appear in person at her next court appearance. He outlined that the next hearing would occur on April 22nd, during which Kaur would be asked to plea to the charge.
The judge emphasized Kaur’s right to a trial and noted that arrangements for the trial would be made on April 22nd. In the meantime, Kaur will remain in custody.
Authorities have stated that a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of Shay’s death. Shay Kang was a student at Brickhouse Primary School, which expressed sorrow over her passing.
Describing Shay as a bright, happy, and fun-loving child, the school conveyed its condolences through a statement provided to West Midlands Police. The school community has begun offering support to both students and staff in light of the tragic news.
The case has sparked widespread concern and sadness in the local community, as the circumstances surrounding Shay’s death continue to unfold.
