Biden’s Utilization of the Term “Illegal” Highlights His Shift to the Right on Immigration

President Joe Biden‘s recent handling of immigration issues reflects a delicate balancing act between appeasing anti-immigrant sentiments while maintaining support from progressive constituents.

This dichotomy was evident in his response to criticism regarding his use of the term “illegal” to describe undocumented individuals during his State of the Union address.

Initially expressing regret for his choice of language, Biden later backtracked through a White House spokesperson, insisting that he did not apologize for using the term. This highlights the challenge of navigating immigration rhetoric in a polarized political climate.

During his State of the Union address, Biden attempted to distance himself from right-wing extremism by condemning actions such as the Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade, the January 6 insurrection, and Donald Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric toward immigrants. However, his policies on immigration reveal a shift toward the right, aligning with Republican agendas of the past.

Biden’s proposals mirror some of the measures advocated by Republicans, while Trump openly promotes a draconian immigration plan crafted by Steven Miller.

This plan includes aggressive tactics such as deploying National Guard troops and local police, expanding detention camps, implementing ideological screenings for visa applicants, and curtailing refugee programs.

Despite these stark realities, Biden’s State of the Union address not only echoed derogatory language towards undocumented immigrants but also extended an invitation to Trump to collaborate on a funding bill.

This bill, if enacted, would allocate billions to immigration enforcement agencies, intensifying detention and deportation efforts and enacting detrimental changes to the immigration system.

The invitation to Trump and the proposed funding bill underscore the complexities of Biden’s approach to immigration, wherein progressive rhetoric clashes with policy decisions that mirror those of his predecessors.

As the debate over immigration continues, Biden faces the challenge of reconciling competing interests within his base while addressing the urgent needs of immigrant communities.
