Lara Trump has unveiled ambitious plans for the Republic National Committee (RNC), detailing a significant allocation of resources toward ensuring election integrity across the nation.
In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Lara Trump, recently elected as co-chair of the GOP governing body, announced the establishment of an “election integrity division” within the committee. This division is tasked with overseeing elections throughout the United States.
The RNC has undergone notable changes following Lara Trump’s election as co-chair alongside longtime Trump supporter Michael Whatley. This shift came after the resignation of Ronna McDaniel, who was previously supported by former President Donald Trump for leadership in 2017. McDaniel’s departure was prompted by funding issues and criticism for Republican losses in various elections since 2020.
According to Politico, over 60 RNC staffers across political, communications, and data departments are reportedly being asked to resign in response to these changes.
There has been longstanding vocal concern among supporters of the MAGA movement regarding the fairness of elections in the United States. Donald Trump himself is facing legal challenges related to efforts to contest the 2020 election outcome. Additionally, figures like Kari Lake, a failed Arizona gubernatorial candidate, have pursued unsuccessful lawsuits challenging voting machines.
Lara Trump outlined the RNC’s strategic shift, emphasizing the establishment of the first-ever election integrity division within the committee. She stressed the significant allocation of resources towards this initiative, highlighting the importance of restoring trust in the electoral process.
“We will have trained poll watchers, poll observers, poll workers, people in tabulation centers all across this country,” Lara Trump stated during her interview with Hannity. She urged individuals to volunteer as poll watchers and lawyers to support the RNC’s efforts.
Some analysts see Lara Trump’s ascendancy and the subsequent changes at the RNC as indicative of a shift towards a more Trump-centric party. Scott Lucas, a professor of international politics at University College Dublin, suggests that Donald Trump’s endorsement of Lara Trump and Whatley signals an attempt to reshape the Republican Party into a vehicle primarily serving Trump’s interests.
He characterizes the current state of the Republican Party as akin to “an organized crime family,” emphasizing a departure from traditional political party functions.
The RNC, under its new leadership, faces its first significant test in November’s presidential election, where Donald Trump will contend with Democratic incumbent Joe Biden. Polls indicate a relatively even split in support between the two candidates.
