The visit of Secretary of State Michelle Donelan to mark the future site of UK Biobank’s new £75 million centre at Bruntwood SciTech’s Manchester Science Park represents a significant milestone for the organization and for biomedical research.

UK Biobank is renowned as the world’s most comprehensive repository of health data, providing invaluable insights to approved researchers worldwide.

The forthcoming state-of-the-art facility, spanning 131,000 square feet and occupying three floors, will serve as a hub for cutting-edge research in the biomedical sciences.

Key features of the new building include laboratory space and a next-generation robotic freezer capable of storing and retrieving UK Biobank’s 20 million biological samples at unprecedented speed, thereby accelerating scientific discovery.

Supported by a substantial £127.6 million award from the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Infrastructure Fund, this development marks the next phase of UK Biobank’s evolution.

Situated alongside thriving life science businesses specializing in diagnostics, genomics, biotech, and precision medicine, the purpose-built facility will facilitate collaboration and innovation.

With specialized features such as enhanced cooling and ventilation systems, high security access, and 100GB superfast connectivity, the new center is poised to drive advancements in research and development.
