Amazon has announced that it will discontinue its “Just Walk Out” self-service technology at Amazon Fresh stores in the United States.
The company informed The Hill on Wednesday that it will replace the technology, which allows customers to grab items and exit without waiting in a checkout line, by tracking their selections with sensors and cameras.
Instead, Amazon will introduce the “Amazon Dash Cart,” enabling shoppers to scan items, place them directly in the cart, and still bypass the checkout line by paying automatically, as stated on an Amazon webpage.
According to Amazon spokesperson Jessica Martin, the decision follows extensive redesign efforts at Amazon Fresh stores over the past year, aimed at enhancing the entire shopping experience with greater value, convenience, and selection.
Martin added that customer feedback indicated a desire for features beyond skipping the checkout line, such as easily locating nearby products and deals, viewing receipts while shopping, and tracking savings throughout the store.
In response to these demands, Amazon is rolling out the Amazon Dash Cart, providing customers with these additional benefits, including the ability to skip the checkout line.
The Information first reported on Amazon’s decision to discontinue the “Just Walk Out” technology at Amazon Fresh stores.
However, Amazon will maintain the “Just Walk Out” technology at its Amazon Go stores and smaller Amazon Fresh stores in the U.K., where it opened its first cashier-less physical grocery store outside the U.S. in 2021 in London.
