Iran launched a serious attack involving drone and missile strikes against Israel, escalating tensions and raising fears of a broader conflict in the Middle East, according to statements from the White House and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Saturday.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that it had deployed numerous missiles and drones towards Israel, as reported by state-run Iranian media outlet Press TV.
IDF spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari labeled the assault as a “direct attack” from Iran, describing it as a “severe and dangerous escalation.” He emphasized that the IDF’s defensive and offensive capabilities were prepared to respond to the large-scale attack.
The National Security Council confirmed that President Biden was regularly briefed on the revealing situation and would convene with his national security team at the White House.
NSC Spokesperson Adrienne Watson underscored the United States’ unwavering support for Israel’s security, affirming that the U.S. would stand by Israel and aid in its defense against threats from Iran.
Israel remains on high alert, with its forces continuously monitoring the situation and its air defenses on heightened alert. Fighter jets and naval vessels have been deployed on defensive missions around Israel.
The Iranian attack comes in the wake of an alleged Israeli strike earlier in the month near the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria, resulting in the deaths of two senior officers from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
This incident marked a remarkable escalation in tensions between Iran and Israel, with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowing retaliation.
The exposed situation has the potential to further exacerbate tensions in the already volatile Middle East, especially despite the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Iran’s support for Hamas, coupled with its direct attack on Israel, is likely to intensify regional hostilities.
The response from the United States and its stance on the conflict remain crucial factors in determining the outcome of the situation. As both sides brace for potential escalation, the international community closely monitors developments in the region.
