Venezuela has responded firmly to the recent turmoil surrounding the raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito by ordering the closure of its embassy and consulates in Ecuador. President Nicolás Maduro conveyed this decision via X, stressing the imperative of restoring international law within Ecuador.

The incursion into the Mexican Embassy occurred earlier this month. It culminated in the arrest of former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas, who had sought asylum within the embassy’s premises since December. Ecuadorian authorities justified Glas’s arrest by citing an outstanding warrant and a corruption-related conviction against him.

In a show of solidarity with Mexico, Maduro vehemently condemned the raid on the embassy, characterizing it as a grievous “act of barbarism” against the Mexican people. The closure of the Venezuelan Embassy in Quito was apparent on Tuesday, with individuals in need of assistance left stranded outside, unable to access embassy personnel.

The decision to shutter diplomatic missions and recall personnel underscores the gravity of the situation and Venezuela’s unwavering stance in response to what it perceives as a violation of diplomatic norms and international law.

Maduro’s call for the immediate withdrawal of Venezuelan diplomats reflects the seriousness with which the Venezuelan government views the incident and its commitment to upholding diplomatic principles.

The tensions between Mexico and Ecuador have been steadily escalating, with Ecuador’s government expressing discontent with Mexico’s ambassador following remarks made by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador regarding Ecuador’s previous election.

This strain in diplomatic relations has now reached a critical juncture, with the events spreading out at the Mexican Embassy in Quito. The closure of Venezuela’s diplomatic missions in Ecuador marks a remarkable development in the ongoing diplomatic fallout from the embassy raid.

It underscores the broader geopolitical implications of the incident and highlights the challenges facing regional diplomatic relations. As the situation continues to unravel, international attention remains focused on Ecuador, Mexico, and Venezuela.

Observers are closely monitoring developments and assessing the implications for regional stability and diplomatic norms. The closure of embassies and the recall of diplomatic personnel represent just one facet of the complex dynamics in this evolving diplomatic saga.
