The Prom movie trailer released around a month ago, and the viewers were all hearts about it. The movie directed by Ryan Murphy is an adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name that premiered in 2018. The story follows an LGBTQ+ couple’s struggle to attend prom accompanied by fun and drama. After its trailer was dropped by Netflix, with tons of positive criticism, it even received backlash for highlighting the A-List stars – Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, and Andrew Rannells – and putting central players Jo Ellen Pellman and Ariana Debose, who play the central couple, Emma and Alyssa, in the background. However, the trailer manages to split its time between storylines pretty evenly and covers all the actors.
The story follows a group of down-on-their-luck Broadway stars that shake up a small Indiana town as they help and stand in support of a teen who has one wish – to attend prom with her girlfriend. Getting in-depth of the story, it sheds the spotlight on Emma(Jo Ellen Pellman ), a high-school student who wants to take her girlfriend to prom, one of the most memorable experiences in a teenager’s life. She wants to look back in her life and remember that she could take her girlfriend to prom. She is the center of the entire story.
The next character that you need to know about is Alyssa(Ariana DeBose), Emma’s girlfriend. She, too, wants to go to the prom with Emma, but her main problem is her mom. She is the PTA president who is against same-gender relationships. The big question that rises is-will her mom find out about these two girls? If yes, then how will she react? Well, for that, you have to watch the movie and find out!
On the quest of saving the girls’ high school prom, the Broadway stars leave no stone unturned to pack the film with comedic relief while also being the agents of an important change the town needs. The film brilliantly captures the liveliness and inspiring message of the musical and turns out to be a film worth watching. Coming back to 2018 The Prom, even with an inspiring LGBTQ+ love story, the movie was seen as a week project during awards season. But still, it managed to take home one Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical.

The show only ran on Broadway for only a year, but the executive producer Ryan Murphy created the film to prolong its legacy. Overall, the movie is a good dose of entertainment, sweet moments, comedy, and emotional roller coasters the viewers are in need of to bid a goodbye to this year. The film showcases emotional moments for the teenager as her relationship is put down in front of the entire PTA board. The incident even has an impact on her mental health.
The film already had a theatrical release with limited audiences on 4th December before it was dropped by Netflix on the OTT platform on 11th December. However, the film has the potential to make your Christmas holidays merrier, and there could not have been any other month for the release of a film like this.
