Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is actively crafting a comprehensive plan to outline how his country envisions bringing an end to the ongoing conflict with Russia. Despite the absence of direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, public statements from both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin indicate significant divergence in their respective positions on potential terms for peace.

Recently, Zelensky convened a major international summit in Switzerland, a gathering that notably excluded Russia, aiming to garner global support for Ukraine’s stance. Reflecting on this effort, Zelensky emphasized the importance of presenting a widely endorsed strategy to resolve the conflict diplomatically. This approach underscores Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts amid ongoing military pressures.

The summit in Switzerland drew participation from over 90 countries, with most endorsing a final communique stressing the imperative of respecting Ukraine’s territorial integrity in any prospective settlement. However, notable absences and disagreements, such as India’s reservations and China’s boycott in protest against Russia’s exclusion, underscored the complex global dynamics surrounding the conflict.

Central to Ukraine’s position is the demand for Russia to withdraw its forces from Ukrainian territory, including the annexed Crimea before formal peace negotiations can commence. Conversely, Putin’s stance, stemming from Russia’s full-scale invasion in early 2022, involves expectations for Ukraine to cede additional territories in its eastern and southern regions.

Zelensky, speaking from Brussels, emphasized the urgency of presenting a detailed peace plan within months, citing the severe toll the conflict has taken on both military personnel and civilians. Meanwhile, Russia continues its military advances, claiming incremental gains on the battlefield despite international condemnation and sanctions.

Ukraine remains reliant on Western support, both militarily and economically, to counter Russian aggression. However, the protracted conflict has strained Ukrainian resources and morale, posing ongoing challenges even as diplomatic efforts intensify.
