Following President Joe Biden’s underwhelming performance in a recent debate against Donald Trump, there has been discussion among both Republicans and Democrats about the possibility of him stepping down from the 2024 presidential race. This conversation, while deemed risky by some experts, has spurred speculation on potential candidates who might replace him.
One of the top contenders for this position is Vice President Kamala Harris. However, another prominent figure being considered is Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. According to her former aide, Mark Burton, Whitmer possesses qualities that Biden lacks, making her a strong candidate.
Burton, who worked with Whitmer for over a decade, believes she has the capability to outperform Trump in a campaign and govern effectively over the next four years. He highlights her strategic approach to politics, always positioning herself in comparison to her opponents.
Although Burton stops short of explicitly stating that Whitmer would be a better candidate than Biden, he emphasizes her unique strengths. These include her youth and a “disarming” sense of humor, which he believes could be advantageous in the race.
Burton also notes that voters often make early decisions on key issues, such as the president’s age, suggesting that Biden’s age could be a disadvantage. Whitmer’s attributes, in contrast, might make her a more appealing choice for many voters.
