The upcoming NATO summit in Washington, scheduled for July 9, 2024, is set against a backdrop of intensifying efforts to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid ongoing tensions with Russia. A primary objective of the summit will be to enhance Ukraine’s ability to fend off Russian aggression, reflecting NATO’s commitment to supporting its Eastern European partner in the face of geopolitical challenges.

In addition to focusing on Ukraine, NATO leaders will also address broader security concerns in the Caucasus and Central Asia. The recent geopolitical shifts, particularly Georgia’s alignment with Moscow under the Georgian Dream-dominated government, have raised significant concerns within NATO.

This has prompted calls for Tbilisi to reconsider its policies, which have strained relations with Western institutions like the European Union and NATO.

Georgia’s recent legislative measures influenced by Moscow, such as the “foreign agents” law and controversial infrastructure projects involving Chinese investments, have drawn criticism from NATO officials. Despite these developments, public opinion in Georgia remains overwhelmingly supportive of EU and NATO membership, highlighting a divergence between government policies and popular sentiment.

Concurrently, Armenia seeks to strengthen its partnership with NATO following heightened tensions with Russia and Azerbaijan, especially in the aftermath of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Armenia’s efforts to forge closer ties with Western institutions, including its aspiration for an updated Individually Tailored Partnership Programme with NATO, underscore its strategic reorientation amidst regional challenges.

The summit will also feature participation from various non-member states and partner countries like Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan, highlighting NATO’s broader engagement through its Partnership for Peace program. This inclusive approach aims to consolidate regional security frameworks that deter Russian influence and stabilize volatile regions like the Caucasus and Central Asia.

The NATO summit marks a critical juncture for adjusting alliance strategies amidst shifting geopolitical landscapes. It reaffirms NATO’s steadfast dedication to collective defense, regional stability, and adeptly managing intricate relationships with neighboring states, all while confronting internal and external security challenges.
