In Gaza, amidst sweltering summer heat, the lifeless body of a Palestinian toddler lay cold in his father’s arms. Outside the hospital, Mahmoud Mikdad cradled his son, Yaman, unable to let go, as flies circled around the boy’s hair. Overwhelmed with grief, Mahmoud cried out to the heavens, questioning why this tragedy had befallen his innocent child.
Yaman, not yet two years old, was a victim of an Israeli airstrike. Over 60 Palestinians were killed in such strikes targeting Hamas militants in southern and central Gaza. The strikes came in response to offensives that Israel claims were necessary to root out Hamas fighters embedded within civilian areas. Despite the intended targets, civilians like Yaman bore the devastating consequences.
The day had started ordinarily for Mahmoud. He had put his children down for a nap in their sheltering apartment when the airstrike hit, instantly killing Yaman. The family, displaced by conflict, had been seeking refuge when tragedy struck, abruptly turning a routine day into one of unimaginable loss.
Grieving, Mahmoud carried his son’s body from Nuseirat camp to Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. The sight of Yaman’s lifeless body, with bare legs and blood-soaked sheets, was a heart-wrenching testament to the innocent lives caught in the crossfire. Outside the hospital morgue, Mahmoud, accompanied by others, caressed and kissed his son’s body, expressing his immeasurable sorrow and love for the boy he described as “more precious than the whole world.”
A small group gathered later to perform funeral prayers over Yaman’s shrouded body. The scene was somber, with bystanders, including children, watching in silence. The poignant farewell underscored the deep and personal losses suffered by countless families in Gaza, illustrating the profound human cost of the ongoing conflict.
