Ahead of the Yankees’ 2023 season opener, Vice President Kamala Harris made a forceful statement regarding the Gaza conflict, emphasizing her commitment to addressing the crisis. During a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Harris expressed profound concern and urged the necessity of achieving a ceasefire.
Harris acknowledged Israel’s right to self-defense but criticized the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in widespread displacement and destruction. “The scenes of suffering and displacement are heartbreaking, and we cannot ignore these tragedies,” she said.

Israeli officials, however, have reacted with caution. The Hostages Families Forum accused Netanyahu of delaying negotiations, while right-wing members of the Israeli cabinet criticized Harris’s pressure for a deal. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir expressed concerns that conceding to Hamas might compromise Israel’s security.
Harris’s remarks also included a call for a nuanced understanding of the Gaza conflict, stressing that it is not a simple binary issue. She urged Americans to recognize the complexity and work towards unity while condemning all forms of hatred and violence.
