The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched an airstrike on Saturday against a Hamas command center located within a school compound in Deir-al Balah, central Gaza. This strike resulted in 30 deaths and 100 injuries, as reported by the Hamas-run Palestinian Ministry of Health. However, the ministry did not specify the number of civilians versus Hamas militants among the casualties.
The school compound was reportedly used by Hamas to establish a command center, a move the IDF stated is in violation of international law. Following the attack, most of the injured and deceased were taken to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, where a hospital spokesperson noted that the majority of the victims were women and children.
In a related development, the IDF had previously issued evacuation orders in Khan Younis, signaling a forthcoming offensive against Hamas militants in the area. Despite these warnings, Hamas has prevented civilians from using its tunnel network across Gaza for evacuation or seeking shelter.
Addressing Congress on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu highlighted that Hamas leaders view Gazan civilians as effective human shields. The use of civilian areas, such as schools and hospitals, for military purposes is prohibited under international law. The United States designated Hamas a foreign terrorist organization on October 8, 1997.
