Van Jones Pushes for Debate on ‘Anti-Jewish Bigots’ Following Walz’s Choice Over Shapiro

CNN commentator Van Jones

Van Jones, CNN commentator urged for an open discussion on antisemitism within the Democratic Party following Vice President Kamala Harris’s decision to select Minnesota Gov.

Tim Walz as her running mate. Jones noted the importance of addressing antisemitic elements that may exist, stating that while support for Palestinians does not necessarily equate to antisemitism, there are some within the party who cross that line.

He emphasized the need for the party to confront and resolve these issues, especially as they relate to the younger, more progressive members concerned about Gaza and feeling neglected by the Biden administration.

Harris’s decision to pick Walz over Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who is Jewish, sparked controversy among different factions of the party. Shapiro was considered a strong candidate due to his potential to help secure Pennsylvania, a crucial state in the electoral map.

However, he faced backlash from progressives and pro-Palestinian activists for his stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict, with some labeling his positions as too supportive of Israel. This led to accusations of antisemitism against those who were particularly critical of Shapiro’s record, with figures like Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz pointing out the distinct and severe scrutiny he faced compared to other candidates.

Republicans also seized on Harris’s decision, framing it as evidence of antisemitism within the Democratic Party. Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer and Rep. Eric Burlison criticized the move, suggesting it was indicative of the party’s shift away from supporting Israel.

Bakari Sellers, another CNN commentator, dismissed these accusations as baseless, defending both Harris’s decision and the Democratic Party’s stance on Israel. Sellers argued that Walz was a strong choice, presenting him as a positive populist who would be difficult for Republicans to undermine, and highlighted Harris’s comfort with Walz as a major factor in her decision.
