Born in West Point, Nebraska, a small community near Omaha, he joined the Army National Guard and later became a teacher in Mankato, Minnesota. In Mankato, he not only taught social studies but also coached football, contributing to the success of the local high school team.
His military career, marked by 24 years of service and the rank of command sergeant major, underscores his leadership and dedication.
