In May 2020, during his first term as governor, Tim Walz was thrust into the national spotlight following the death of George Floyd, who was killed by a Minneapolis police officer’s knee on his neck for nearly nine minutes. This event sparked widespread protests across Minnesota and beyond.
Philonise Floyd, George Floyd’s brother, believes that Walz’s dedication to holding those responsible accountable and addressing police brutality makes him an ideal candidate for vice president. Floyd, 43, praised Walz’s readiness for the role, stating, “He is well-suited for the challenge ahead.
I have full confidence in his capability.” This endorsement follows the recent announcement by Vice President Kamala Harris that Walz will be her running mate, a decision that has been largely welcomed by the Democratic Party.
Now serving his second term as governor and having previously spent 12 years in Congress, Walz has been introduced to the public through various roles, including as a football coach, educator, and member of the Army National Guard.
Floyd has been impressed by Walz’s leadership for many years. He views Walz’s decision to appoint Attorney General Keith Ellison to prosecute the officers involved in his brother’s death as a defining moment of justice that led to the convictions of all four officers. “Initially, he appeared as just another politician, but his choice of Ellison demonstrated his genuine commitment to justice,” Floyd noted.
Additionally, Floyd was moved by Walz’s attendance at Daunte Wright’s funeral in April 2022, following Wright’s fatal shooting by a Minnesota police officer. “His gesture showed real empathy and unity,” Floyd remarked.
Floyd was initially surprised and then elated when Walz was named as a potential vice presidential candidate, and he was thrilled to see Walz chosen for the role. “I am eager to support him in any way possible and contribute to his campaign,” Floyd said, indicating his willingness to assist on the campaign trail.
