Walz Responds to ‘Stolen Valor’ Accusations from Vance by Defending Military Service Record

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz

Despite a barrage of Republican critiques, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz ardently stood by his military record on Tuesday. Speaking at the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) 2024 convention in Los Angeles, Walz emphasized his deep pride in his 24-year tenure with the Army National Guard. He called for respect towards all military personnel, regardless of their service level.

This defense came in response to recent accusations from Republican Senator JD Vance, who has criticized Walz for allegedly misrepresenting his military experience. Vance, a supporter of Donald Trump, claimed that Walz’s service was exaggerated and accused him of avoiding combat duty. He argued that Walz had not served in a combat zone and suggested that his retirement was timed to dodge deployment.

In countering these claims, Walz highlighted his long-standing commitment to service, which began with his enlistment shortly after his 17th birthday, inspired by his father’s own military service during the Korean War. He also pointed to his decision to run for Congress in 2005 as another form of service to his country.

The controversy surrounding Walz’s service has escalated since Vice President Kamala Harris named him as her running mate. The Harris campaign recently revised Walz’s military biography to correct prior inaccuracies. Despite ongoing criticisms and the potential for further debate, Walz remained steadfast in defending his service record. Vance has suggested a debate to discuss these issues, but no date has been set.
