$20 Billion Weaponry Sale to Israel Gets Blinken’s Approval

$20 Billion Weaponry Sale to Israel

On Tuesday, the State Department revealed that Secretary of State Antony Blinken has approved a substantial arms package for Israel, estimated at around $20 billion. The potential sale encompasses up to 50 F-15 fighter jets, 30 advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles, 120 mm tank cartridges, high explosive mortar cartridges, and medium tactical vehicles, as outlined by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency.

This agency also notified Congress of the potential sales on the same day. In addition to the new fighter jets, the proposed sales include modification kits for Israel’s existing fleet of 25 F-15s. The bulk of the proposed sale, valued at $18.82 billion, pertains to these new jets and their associated equipment.

The press release emphasized that this sale underscores the U.S. commitment to Israel’s security and aligns with U.S. national interests in bolstering Israel’s self-defense capabilities. It is designed to enhance Israel’s ability to address current and future threats, fortify its homeland defense, and act as a deterrent to regional adversaries.

The release also assured that these sales would not disrupt the fundamental military balance in the region. However, the Associated Press highlighted that the delivery of these weapons could be several years away, given the time required to fulfill such contracts.

This arms deal comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly with Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza. The situation has been further strained by accusations from Iran regarding the assassination of a key Hamas leader in Tehran on July 31.
