A recent University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll reveals Vice President Harris is currently ahead of former President Trump by 5 points in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, a crucial area for the upcoming election. The poll, released on Wednesday, shows Harris leading Trump 49 percent to 44 percent in this district, which has historically leaned Republican but could be pivotal in the November election.
Maine, alongside Nebraska, allocates its electoral votes based on congressional districts rather than as a winner-take-all. With four electoral votes in total, Maine awards two to the statewide winner and one to each of its two districts. While the 1st District and the state as a whole tend to favor Democrats, the 2nd District, which Trump won in both 2016 and 2020, remains competitive.
Harris’s lead in the 2nd District is an improvement from last month’s poll, which showed Trump leading by 4 points. Despite this, Harris is not yet favored to win the district, which Decision Desk HQ had previously categorized as “Likely Republican” before President Biden’s withdrawal from the race. Trump had secured the district by approximately 7 points in 2020 and 10 points in 2016.
The same poll shows Harris with a more substantial lead across the state, outperforming Biden’s previous margins. Harris is ahead of Trump by 17 points statewide, 55 percent to 38 percent. The survey, conducted from August 15-19 among 951 likely voters, has a margin of error of 3.2 points for the overall sample and 4.6 points for the 2nd District.
