Harris Seen as Boosting Democrats’ Prospects for House Majority

U.S Vice President Kamala Harris

Democrats are growing increasingly optimistic about their prospects of regaining control of the House now that Vice President Harris, rather than President Biden, will head the ticket in November.

Following the party’s national convention in Chicago last week, numerous legislators have noted that this late change has spurred a surge in new volunteers, an increase in campaign donations, and a revitalization of energy among their core supporters. This newfound enthusiasm offers fresh hope for recapturing the House next year.

Democrats see renewed hope for House control with Harris leading the ticket and increased volunteer and donation support

“I can’t think of a single member who doesn’t feel this way,” commented Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), reflecting on the palpable boost in morale. “We’re witnessing the excitement; it’s evident in the feedback.”

Rep. Dan Kildee (D-Mich.) agreed, suggesting that Harris’s candidacy could potentially broaden their campaign’s reach. He highlighted the noticeable rise in both volunteer engagement and small-dollar contributions, underscoring their importance in the electoral landscape.

This upbeat sentiment marks a stark contrast to the Democrats’ outlook just two months prior, following President Biden’s poor debate performance against former President Trump, which had severely impacted his approval ratings and, by extension, the party’s prospects.

Rep. Annie Kuster (D-N.H.) admitted that she had previously feared substantial losses, but now feels more confident about their chances. As leader of the New Democrat Coalition, she has observed a serious shift in polling data since Harris’s ascension, with positive trends in her own New Hampshire district.

Republicans, however, are adjusting their strategy in response to Harris’s higher popularity. They face the challenge of quickly redefining their campaign messages while contending with a formidable Democratic fundraising advantage. Despite acknowledging these hurdles, they maintain that the race remains competitive and well within their reach.

Democrats remain cautiously optimistic, emphasizing that while current signs are promising, sustained effort and strategy will be crucial in the final stretch. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) stressed the importance of translating current momentum into concrete victories, urging a focused and diligent approach.

Recent forecasts reflect this uncertainty, with Decision Desk HQ noting a slight decline in the GOP’s chances but still favoring their control of the House. As the campaign progresses, the situation is expected to fluctuate, keeping the outcome uncertain.

Democrats are buoyed by Harris’s leadership and her choice of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as running mate, which they believe could bolster their appeal to undecided and rural voters. Kuster and other Democrats are hopeful that Walz’s background and speech will enhance their campaign’s outreach in traditionally challenging areas, potentially tipping the scales in their favor.
