Survey Indicates Harris Gaining on Trump in Key Areas of Economy and Crime

Vice President Kamala Harris and Former President Donald Trump

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals that Vice President Harris is narrowing the gap with former President Trump on key issues like the economy and crime. Released on Tuesday, the survey shows that 43% of registered voters favor Trump’s economic plan, while 40% back Harris’s newly revealed economic agenda.

This poll, conducted shortly after Harris introduced her economic platform during a North Carolina rally, reflects a shift from July, when Trump held an 11-point lead on this issue. The current 3-point difference now falls within the poll’s margin of error.

The economy is the top voter concern at 26%, with threats to democracy/extremism at 22%, and immigration at 13%.

The poll also shows the two candidates are now tied at 40% on the issue of crime, a serious change from July when Trump led Harris by 5 points. Harris has been closing the gap since securing the Democratic nomination, yet both candidates remain widely unpopular—59% of voters have an unfavorable view of Trump, while 52% feel the same about Harris. In terms of favorability, Harris edges out Trump, with 47% viewing her positively compared to Trump’s 39%.

The economy remains the top concern for 26% of voters, followed by threats to democracy and extremism at 22%, and immigration at 13%. Despite Harris’s gains in other areas, Trump maintains an 8-point advantage on immigration policy, with 45% of voters supporting his stance compared to Harris’s 37%. However, on the issue of extremism, Harris is preferred by 42% of voters, outpacing Trump, who stands at 36%.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted between August 23-25, surveyed 1,028 adults, including 902 registered voters, with a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
