A wedding might be in the near future for Jennifer Hudson. The EGOT winner, who celebrated her 43rd birthday on September 12, is in a relationship with her longtime friend Common, who hasn’t hesitated to share his desire to marry her.
Despite never having been married, Jennifer was previously engaged to professional wrestler David Otunga from 2008 to 2017. Together, they share a son, David Otunga Jr., who recently turned 15. Initially, both Jennifer and Common played down rumors of their relationship and denied dating for months before they finally confirmed their romance in January of this year.
Since then, Common has openly discussed whether marriage is in the cards for him and Jennifer, reflecting on his readiness for commitment. In one of his first interviews after confirming their relationship, the Just Wright star appeared on the Today Show and responded to questions about being the “marrying type.” He affirmed, “I’ve grown and the work I’ve done on myself has helped me realize I am ready for marriage.”
He went on to explain his mindset, saying, “I have the ability and desire, and when the time is right, I’ll know it,” adding, “Everything for me is about divine timing.” Common further elaborated on his spiritual approach: “I trust in the discernment God provides, when you feel it deep in your gut, in your heart, and spirit.” He concluded, “When I feel that, I’ll communicate with her, and if she feels the same, why not?”
Later in the year, during an appearance on The Breakfast Club podcast, he was even more candid, not only reiterating that he is ready for marriage but specifying that if he gets married, it will be to Jennifer.
Both being from Chicago, Common noted how their shared roots bring a sense of comfort. He explained, “Having a woman from Chicago lets me just be at home. It’s been a while since I felt that, where I could relax with loved ones without work on my mind.”
He also emphasized the strength of their bond, saying, “I’ve loved all the women I’ve dated, but this relationship is different—it’s healthy, it’s beautiful. If I’m going to get married, it’s going to be to her. That’s all there is to it.”
Interestingly, his ex, Tiffany Haddish, gave her blessing to the couple. After fans reacted to Common’s comments about marrying Jennifer on social media, one remarked, “Well, he finally said it—he wants to marry her. He’s never said that about any other woman before.” Tiffany, who dated Common for over a year until 2021, responded, “EXACTLY! I hope they actually get married.”
