Margaret Qualley recently shared a funny memory of meeting her co-star Dennis Quaid, back when he was dating her mother, Andie MacDowell, in the early 2000s.
The 29-year-old actress, daughter of Andie and former model Paul Qualley, was just four when her parents divorced. In a candid interview, Margaret reminisced about her childhood obsession with the 1998 remake of The Parent Trap, hoping it would inspire her parents to reconcile, as the movie’s storyline suggested.
Her hopes were dashed when she found out her mom had started dating Dennis Quaid, her Dinner with Friends co-star, who also played a dad in The Parent Trap. Recalling their first encounter, Margaret said she was startled and made fun of Quaid’s red leather pants when she met him at age six.
Margaret also mentioned that Dennis’ bold fashion choice might have been a sign of the times, speculating that “he was going through something.” The anecdote about this meeting isn’t new for Margaret, as she also discussed her real-life Parent Trap connection during a 2019 appearance on The Late Late Show.
Margaret now stars alongside Quaid in The Substance, a film that also features Demi Moore. The horror movie delves into a celebrity’s quest to regain her youth through a transformative substance, with Margaret playing her younger counterpart, Sue, and Quaid taking on the role of a sexist TV executive.
In the same interview, Margaret opened up about the challenges she faced filming an intense dance scene, which left her overwhelmed. Before shooting, she confessed to crying in the bathroom and admitted she needed both tequila and marijuana to get through it.
While preparing for the role, Margaret and director Coralie Fargeat clashed over the physical appearance of her character. Though personal trainers helped her achieve an athletic build, Coralie envisioned a curvier look, akin to Jessica Rabbit. Eventually, a prosthetics team created an exaggerated bust for Margaret to wear.
The Substance has garnered critical acclaim, including a 13-minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival. The movie also features a daring scene where Demi Moore is fully naked as she “births” Margaret’s character.
Demi shared that filming such a vulnerable scene was made easier by Margaret’s presence, as it fostered trust and safety between them. The movie is set for release in the United States and United Kingdom on September 20.
