Vivienne, the youngest of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s children, has begun charting her own path, taking after her famous parents. Born in July 2008, alongside her twin brother Knox, Vivienne is the youngest of six siblings. The twins were welcomed in Nice, France.
In an October 2021 interview with PEOPLE, Jolie shared her thoughts on parenting, saying, “Having six unique individuals under one roof is such an exciting journey. Each one goes through distinct phases, feelings, and curiosities. It’s a joy to experience that with them. As parents, our job is to help them discover their own identities, and we can only do that by evolving alongside them.”
By May 2024, Vivienne was credited as “Vivienne Jolie” in the Playbill for the Broadway production of The Outsiders, where she worked with her mother as a producer. It seems she may have opted to drop her father’s last name, though it is unclear if the change has been made official.
Here’s a closer look at Vivienne’s journey, from her early acting roles to her love for theater and her latest projects.
Born with her twin brother in France
Jolie announced her pregnancy on the red carpet at the Independent Spirit Awards, where she showcased her baby bump. Vivienne and Knox arrived on July 12, 2008, in Nice, France, with Vivienne born just a minute after Knox and weighing 5 lbs.
Following their birth, the family settled in Château Miraval, located in Provence. Both parents shared with PEOPLE how their older children helped care for the newborn twins.
“Shiloh and Zahara love picking out clothes for the babies, and they even help with changing them and holding them,” Jolie revealed. “It’s adorable to see them act like little mothers.”
Pitt humorously added that the house had turned into a bit of a “cuckoo’s nest” with all the activity.
Her name honors Jolie’s late mother
Vivienne was named after Jolie’s late mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who passed away from cancer a little more than a year before Vivienne’s birth. The choice of her middle name was a tribute to Bertrand.
Jolie shared in August 2023 that Vivienne often reminds her of her mother. “Viv isn’t someone who seeks attention but instead supports those around her, much like my mom,” Jolie said, reflecting on how Vivienne embodies her late mother’s caring nature.
Her acting debut in Maleficent
Vivienne made her on-screen debut in 2014, appearing alongside her mother in Maleficent, where she played the younger version of Elle Fanning’s character, Aurora. Jolie explained that Vivienne, a toddler at the time, was cast because other children were too scared of Jolie’s menacing costume.
Jolie told Entertainment Weekly that although she and Pitt don’t plan for their children to become actors, Vivienne was the only one brave enough to work with her in full Maleficent attire. “The other children were terrified, so it had to be Viv,” Jolie shared.
Reflecting on the experience, Jolie recalled how Vivienne surprised everyone with her ability to follow instructions, even during rehearsals, despite her young age.
She’s made several red carpet appearances
Despite being largely shielded from the public eye, Vivienne has appeared on the red carpet with her mother on numerous occasions. She accompanied Jolie at the premieres of The Eternals in both London and Los Angeles in 2021, alongside her siblings.
Vivienne has also attended other major events, such as the premiere of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in 2019 and more recently, The Outsiders Broadway premiere, where she contributed behind the scenes.
Vivienne worked on a Broadway project with her mother
In August 2023, Jolie announced that she was producing a Broadway adaptation of The Outsiders. Vivienne, having attended early workshops, encouraged her mother to take on the project.
As a volunteer assistant, Vivienne became heavily involved and developed a strong passion for the musical. Jolie expressed her admiration for her daughter’s dedication, calling her “a young artist who focuses on supporting others.”
By June 2024, The Outsiders had won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical, with Jolie and Vivienne proudly attending the ceremony together.
Vivienne is the family’s theater enthusiast
Jolie revealed during The Outsiders red carpet that Vivienne’s love for theater made her the natural choice to assist with the production. She described Vivienne as the family’s biggest theater fan.
According to Jolie, Vivienne took her role seriously, often reminding her mom of the tasks at hand. “She’ll correct me if I miss something,” Jolie said. “She’s very detail-oriented.”
They share matching tattoos
In a September 2024 interview with CR Fashion Book, Jolie disclosed that she and Vivienne had matching tattoos to celebrate their work on The Outsiders. The tattoos say “Stay Gold,” inspired by a song from the production, symbolizing the bond they shared throughout the project.
