Although David Beckham and Gordon Ramsay have shared many moments together, cooking isn’t typically one of them. “We’ve been friends for about 22 years, and he’s cooked for me just once. Once in 22 years!” David, 49, remarked to PEOPLE during the Stella Artois Let’s Do Dinner event in New York City.
As a global ambassador for Stella Artois, David celebrated an evening filled with “Worth More” moments, reflecting the brand’s latest campaign. For him, the purpose of this concept lies in fostering “genuine connection” through shared meals.
“It’s why I love to cook. It’s why I love to eat. It’s why I always love to barbecue for the family because it really brings us together. Our family has always made it a point to sit down at six o’clock every night when we’re all in the same country,” he explained.
“Sunday roasts have always been a tradition in our home. I think that’s why I enjoy cooking so much; I like to make my family happy, and I believe they appreciate my cooking,” he added.
Together with his wife Victoria Beckham, David has four children: Brooklyn, 25; Romeo, 22; Cruz, 19; and Harper, 13. Despite his love for cooking, David revealed that it was Ramsay, 57, who taught one of his sons how to prepare a signature dish.
“One of my sons is obsessed with beef Wellington—Gordon is famous for it—and he taught my son how to make it himself,” David said, recalling the one occasion he had Ramsay’s cooking. “So, he wasn’t really cooking for us, but we ended up eating it anyway.” David reminisced about a cook-off with Ramsay a few years back in Los Angeles. “I went on one of his shows, and he obviously won,” he laughed.
“I think he cheated, to be honest. He said we could add one surprise ingredient at the end. I thought I’d add something random, but he brought out fresh lobster!” David exclaimed. “He got away with it!”
In a 2023 cover story for PEOPLE, Ramsay reflected on their friendship, saying, “David, Victoria, and the kids are just as normal as Tana and I. They’re down to earth, hardworking, and amazing foodies.”
