Meri and Kody Brown are not on the same page when it comes to how they should handle their separation. In the September 22 episode of Sister Wives, Kody shared an update regarding his split from Meri.
“Roughly two months ago, Meri told me she was heading to Utah to meet with our church leaders and officially request a divorce,” Kody, 55, explained during the show. “In our church, this is called a release.”
All of Kody’s marriages were solemnized through the Apostolic United Brethren church under what they refer to as a “covenant,” and Meri feels it’s important to formally end things since they are no longer moving forward as a couple.
“I don’t want to be eternally connected to him if he doesn’t want me,” Meri, 53, expressed. “At this point, I think it’s best to sever all ties.” In her confessional, Meri mentioned that when she asked Kody about moving ahead with the release, he showed resistance. She explained that her ex “didn’t want to recognize the authority of the church leaders.”
For Kody, though, the relationship is beyond repair. “The damage is too deep to ever reconcile,” he said. “I don’t want to be accountable to this church or its nonsense anymore,” Kody added. “I’m letting Meri go her way because if I stay angry, it turns into more arguments. It took her a long time to realize it was over, and I needed her to understand that.”
Having spent nearly a decade in uncertainty within the marriage, Meri is finally ready to move forward. “I’m done with this,” she stated. Meri and Kody were together for more than 32 years before confirming their separation in January 2023.
Meri briefly dated Amos Andrews after their split. Before Meri and Kody parted ways, his other wives, Christine and Janelle Brown, both left him within a year of each other. Now, Robyn Brown remains Kody’s only wife.
