At 79, ABBA Icon Björn Ulvaeus Celebrates His Third Marriage with a Touching Ceremony

Swedish Singer and Songwriter, Björn Ulvaeus

Björn Ulvaeus, a member of the legendary band ABBA, has officially remarried for the third time. On Saturday, September 21, Ulvaeus’ Instagram account shared a message confirming his marriage to Christina Sas, which took place in her home country of Denmark, specifically in Copenhagen.

The announcement featured several photos from the event, where it appeared that Sandi Toksvig, former host of The Great British Baking Show, officiated the ceremony while wearing an elaborate red and gold robe. Toksvig had previously collaborated on the script for Mamma Mia! The Party, a dining experience inspired by ABBA, which takes place at The O2 Arena in London.

Björn Ulvaeus and Christina Sas exchanged vows in a charming Copenhagen wedding, surrounded by lush greenery and heartfelt performances

Both the bride and groom were outfitted by designer Soeren Le Schmidt, according to the Instagram post. Ulvaeus wore a dark suit paired with a white T-shirt, while Sas looked stunning in a green gown, carrying a bouquet of blue flowers.

“On the 21st of September 2024, Björn Ulvaeus married Christina Sas from Herning, Denmark,” read the caption under the post. The message also detailed how the couple first met in 2021 in Nürnberg during the release of ABBA’s last album Voyage, and began dating in the spring of 2022.

In addition to family and close friends attending the wedding, the caption revealed that Sandi Toksvig, along with Danish musicians Anne Linnet and Kaya Brüel, contributed to making the evening special by performing. The set of images included a charming photo of the newlyweds posing with Linnet and Brüel, with the first snapshot featuring the couple among lush greenery.

Ulvaeus’ previous marriages include his union with fellow ABBA member Agnetha Fältskog from 1971 to 1980, and later to Lena Kallersjö in 1981. He has two children with each of his ex-wives. His marriage to Kallersjö lasted 41 years before they decided to part ways in 2022.

The former couple announced their split on February 23, 2022, releasing a statement, according to The Independent, which stated, “We remain close and good friends and will continue to celebrate our grandchildren’s birthdays and other family celebrations together.”

On the music front, ABBA — consisting of Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad — released their final studio album Voyage in November 2021, paired with a virtual ABBA Voyage concert held in a custom-built London venue.

In an interview with Rolling Stone U.K. in May 2023, Ulvaeus reflected on how far technology has come, commenting, “Back in 1982, when ABBA split, I couldn’t have imagined a digital version of myself performing every night. At the time, we had just bought our first IBM PC, with only 64K RAM and no internet in sight. The journey we’ve been on since is truly astonishing.”
