Andrew Garfield Reflects on Unexpected Depth of Florence Pugh’s Se*x Scene

Garfield shared that the camera operator turned away during an intimate scene to maintain privacy on set

The anticipation for We Live In Time, the romantic comedy featuring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, has reached new heights following Garfield’s recent revelation about their filming experience.

He shared that the two actors became so engrossed in a sex scene that they didn’t hear the director call cut, showcasing the undeniable chemistry that audiences are eager to see on screen.

For those who may not know, this film features Garfield and Pugh in a unique love story that begins when Pugh’s character, Almut, accidentally hits Tobias, portrayed by Garfield, with her car.

Garfield reveals an intense filming moment where he and Pugh missed the director’s call to cut during a love scene

The narrative spans a decade, chronicling the couple’s journey through life’s challenges, including the joys of parenthood and Almut’s health struggles, promising a mix of heart-wrenching and uplifting moments.

In a recent interview, Garfield discussed a particular intimate scene that escalated to the point where they completely missed the director’s cue to stop. To preserve their privacy, the camera operator turned away during the filming, illustrating the trust and comfort present on set.

During a Q&A session at 92NY on the Upper East Side, Garfield recounted, “We were doing the first take of this very intimate, passionate scene. The set was closed, meaning it was just Florence, me, and the camera operator, a kind man named Stuart, who was incredibly polite and gentle.”

He continued by explaining that the director was in another room, leading them to become fully immersed in the scene. “It became so passionate that we pushed beyond our intended boundaries because we simply didn’t hear ‘cut.’ We felt safe and decided to let the moment come to light naturally,” Garfield elaborated.

At one point, Garfield and Pugh seemed to share an unspoken understanding that the take was extending longer than planned. When Garfield looked up, he noticed Stuart and the boom operator had turned away, indicating how deeply they were lost in the moment.

During the Toronto International Film Festival’s Q&A, Pugh also commended director John Crawley for cultivating a safe filming environment, which allowed the cast to authentically portray the film’s intimate and emotional scenes.
