Martha Stewart recently opened up about her long-standing estrangement from her ex-husband. During the New York premiere of her Netflix documentary Martha on October 21, the 83-year-old entrepreneur revealed to PEOPLE that she hasn’t been in contact with Andrew “Andy” Stewart for over two decades.
When asked if Andy had seen the documentary, Martha responded, “The ex-husband? I really don’t know. We haven’t spoken in over 20 years, unfortunately.” Martha and Andy were married for nearly three decades, tying the knot in 1961 and finalizing their divorce in 1990. Together, they share one daughter, Alexis Stewart, born in 1965. In the new documentary, Martha discloses that both she and Andy were unfaithful during their marriage.
Sharing candid advice for young women, Martha stated, “If you’re married and your husband cheats, it means he’s no good. Get out of that relationship.” A producer on the documentary then asked if Martha had engaged in an affair herself. Without hesitation, she admitted, “Yes, I did. But I don’t think Andy ever found out.”
In 2020, Martha reflected on the emotional toll her divorce took, telling PEOPLE, “It was devastating for me since no one in my family had ever divorced before. What hurt even more is that we haven’t spoken since. But I’ve found strength and motivation to keep moving forward.”
According to a press release, the documentary Martha explores her life’s journey—from modeling as a teenager to becoming the first self-made female billionaire in the U.S. Martha told PEOPLE she hopes the film inspires others, saying, “If you work hard, stay creative, and use your talents wisely, you can build something meaningful.” She also expressed pride in her teaching efforts over the years, noting, “Being able to educate others has brought me immense satisfaction.”
