Two Navy aviators, Lt. Cmdr. Lyndsay Evans and Lt. Serena Wileman, both 31, tragically died in a plane crash near Mt. Rainier, Washington, during a routine training flight on October 15. The two women, both from California, were aboard a two-seat EA-18G Growler warfare aircraft when it went down in a remote, steep area at an altitude of 6,000 feet.

Their deaths were confirmed after several days of search and rescue efforts in the wilderness. Evans and Wileman were part of the Electronic Attack Squadron 130, known as the “Zappers,” stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington.

The Navy released a heartfelt statement describing Evans and Wileman as role models and trailblazers, noting their significant influence on their peers both on and off the flight deck. Lt. Cmdr. Evans was especially notable for her participation in the first all-female pregame flyover at the 2023 Super Bowl, which commemorated the 50th anniversary of women flying in the Navy. Lt. Wileman was early in her Navy career but had already earned a reputation for her compassion and care for others.

Evans, a highly experienced naval flight officer, had completed two sea tours and was recognized as the Growler instructor of the year for her expertise and leadership. She grew up in Palmdale, California, and attended USC. Along with Wileman, Evans participated in combat operations in Yemen in 2023 and 2024 as part of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Carrier Air Wing 3. Both aviators were decorated for their service and combat performances.

Wileman, described by her peers as someone who could brighten any room, was known for her positive spirit and kindness. She was married to Brandon, whom she met during flight school. Her squadron members and commanding officers, including Capt. Marvin Scott of Carrier Air Wing 3, praised both Evans and Wileman for their contributions, calling them tenacious and outstanding warriors who left a lasting impression on everyone they worked with.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and the Navy is prioritizing support for the families of the fallen aviators. The entire Growler community, as well as the Navy, is mourning the loss of these two exceptional women who made significant contributions to Naval Aviation and served as role models for future generations.
