Rebranding his age, Ty Pennington has embraced turning 60 by calling it “sexty.” This week, the former host of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition celebrated his milestone birthday and the beginning of a new decade with a sultry shirtless photo posted on Instagram, taken by his wife, Kellee Merrell.
In the caption, which he shared on Friday, October 19, Pennington humorously remarked that he is “thirst trapping all the way into 60 because why not.” He also mentioned a follower’s comment suggesting he might not have much time left, playfully calling it his official petition to redefine 60 as “#sexty.”
Pennington concluded his message with feelings of gratitude and anticipation for the upcoming year and decade, along with hashtags like “#SeniorDiscount,” “#ThisIsSixty,” “#AgingIsAGift,” “#TyTurnsSixty,” and “#BlueSteel.”
The shirtless image featured the HGTV star lying on a bed, his arm casually draped over his head, adorned with necklaces. Many friends supported Pennington’s post, including Love It or List It star Hilary Farr, who commented, “At a certain point – we all look best lying on our back 😝 but sexy is timeless. 🥳”
Having married Merrell in November 2021, Pennington has recently been celebrating life more openly. Back in March, following his surgery for an abscess, he expressed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that he was feeling “great.”
At that time, Pennington joked, “You know what’s great is if you almost die, you get so much attention. It feels so nice to be that loved.” He then added humorously, “I’m planning another one… No, I’m kidding!”
In July 2023, Pennington shared on Instagram that he had been hospitalized in the ICU due to an abscess that narrowed his airway, making it difficult for him to breathe. Fortunately, he was discharged the following day, and he reflected on the experience, which changed his outlook on the fleeting nature of time.
Pennington stated, “That’s why the 60s is gonna be like time to start doing everything. I love being part of these projects because we all want to ensure we’ve done things to be remembered.”
Earlier this month, he conveyed a profound message about the fragility of life on Instagram, prompted by the destruction caused by Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helene.
He wrote, “The last couple of weeks have been a stark reminder of just how fragile life really is. First Hurricane Helene and now Milton. Holding my loved ones extra close and praying that Milton will go easy on all of us. If you can get out, please do. Sending love to everyone.”
