Liam Neeson has embraced sobriety since 2013, reflecting on his decision with a sense of relief. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, he remarked, “I wish I’d done it 20 years ago,” acknowledging that while he wasn’t a heavy drinker, he enjoyed alcohol socially.
He realized his habits were becoming concerning, particularly when he found himself finishing multiple bottles of wine in one evening. Concerned about setting a poor example for his sons, Micheál, 29, and Daniel, 28, he chose to quit without any fanfare.
Neeson noted that he now experiences greater clarity, although he empathizes with friends who have struggled with similar choices. In a 2014 GQ interview, he shared that his increased drinking followed the tragic loss of his wife, Natasha Richardson, who died from a brain hemorrhage after a skiing accident. He acknowledged, “It was so easy to just… I’d be on my second bottle [of wine].”
Now, the actor, known for his roles in Taken and Non-Stop, emphasizes the importance of maintaining his fitness. However, he prefers not to reveal the specifics of his workout regimen, stating, “I’m so fed up seeing actors talking about what they do.”
