Tragically, Holden Trent, a player for the Philadelphia Union, has passed away at the age of 25. The Major League Soccer club confirmed his death on Saturday, October 26, revealing that the goalkeeper had died earlier that day.
In a heartfelt statement, the Philadelphia Union expressed their sorrow, saying, “The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Trent. While he was a wonderful player and fierce competitor, he was more importantly a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who made those around him better.”
The statement further highlighted Trent’s qualities, noting, “He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication, and perseverance, and he will be deeply missed. We extend our greatest sympathies to his family, his fiancé, and his friends.”
Out of respect for his loved ones, the team announced that they would not disclose additional details regarding the circumstances of Trent’s death. His family also released a statement on his Instagram account on Saturday, indicating that they would provide information about his funeral services in due time.
They expressed gratitude for the support they received, stating, “We want to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Holden passed away this afternoon surrounded by his family and friends. Our family is deeply touched to see and experience the love you all have for Holden.”
Originally hailing from Greensboro, North Carolina, Trent was selected as the 28th overall pick in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft after completing his education at High Point University, where he earned the title of Big South Goalkeeper of the Year in both 2021 and 2022.
Although Trent had not yet debuted with the first team, ESPN reported that he made six appearances for the Union’s affiliate team during the most recent season, proudly wearing jersey number 13.
Major League Soccer also issued a statement regarding Trent’s untimely death on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Major League Soccer joins the Philadelphia Union and our entire soccer community in mourning the tragic passing of Union goalkeeper Holden Trent.”
The league acknowledged his potential, remarking, “A young goalkeeper with a bright future, Trent showcased determination and professionalism every day as he contributed to the close-knit goalkeeping unit at Philadelphia.”
In closing, the league offered condolences, adding, “We extend our deepest condolences to his fiancée, his family and friends, his teammates, and the entire Philadelphia Union community. MLS is coordinating with the club to provide players and family members with the resources and support they need during this tragic time.”
