During a recent rally in Salem, Virginia, former President Donald Trump called for barring transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports, a topic that resonated strongly with a local college swim team.

This rally was particularly significant for the Roanoke College women’s swim team, who have been vocal about their concerns regarding fairness in the competition after a transgender swimmer transitioned from the men’s team and joined the women’s team.

Trump’s remarks highlighted his opposition to what he referred to as the “radical left” and their support for transgender athletes, branding it as “transgender craziness.”

The controversy surrounding transgender athletes in sports has intensified, especially following the recent decision at Roanoke College. In October 2023, a transgender swimmer, after competing on the men’s team, joined the women’s team, which alarmed the female athletes.

They expressed concerns about the potential competitive edge the transgender athlete might have, arguing that it creates an uneven playing field and undermines the integrity of women’s sports.

At the rally, Trump invited several members of the Roanoke College women’s swim team to join him on stage, where they showcased their support for his stance against transgender athletes participating in women’s sports.

The team members, dressed in pink shirts emblazoned with a hot dog graphic that read “Keep men out of women’s sports,” were met with applause as they stood alongside Trump. Team captain Lilly Mullens took the opportunity to voice her appreciation for Trump’s support, emphasizing the belief that men possess an inherent advantage over women in sports.

Mullens further criticized the policies supported by Democratic leaders, particularly targeting Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden. She accused them of perpetuating “anti-woman, sex-based discrimination” through their advocacy for inclusive policies in sports.

This perspective reflects a growing sentiment among some female athletes who feel that allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sports compromises fairness and equality.

In addition to discussing transgender athletes, Trump also touched on broader economic issues, claiming that under Harris’ leadership, the economy is struggling, likening it to a depression.

He referenced a disappointing jobs report that indicated a significant drop in job creation, with only 12,000 jobs added in October, the lowest figure since 2020. Trump’s rally combined both social and economic themes, appealing to his supporters on multiple fronts as the 2024 election approaches.
