Marlee Matlin’s granddaughter is beginning her journey in sign language. On November 3, the 59-year-old actress posted a video on her Instagram featuring her baby granddaughter, Brooklyn Rose, born to her daughter, Sarah Rose Grandalski, in late April. The clip shows Sarah feeding Brooklyn a bottle while the little one opens and closes her hand, attempting her first sign.
“Brooklyn is signing her first sign!!! MILK! SO HAPPY TO HAVE CAUGHT IT ON VIDEO! #ASL @sarahgrandalski @frankieturn2 #halloweennight #sarahdressedasvelma #soproud 🤟🏼🤟🏼,” Matlin expressed in her caption. While attending the Media Access Awards in Hollywood last month, Matlin reflected on her experiences as a new grandmother.
“It’s been wonderful. What I enjoy most is giving her tons of kisses every day and then handing her back to her mom without the responsibilities that come with being a mom myself,” Matlin told PEOPLE.
Eager to share her knowledge, she added, “I can’t wait to teach her and show her everything about life, including communicating in sign language, which is what I’m currently doing. I’m not teaching sign language per se, but we’re communicating through it.” Matlin embraced her role as a first-time grandmother when her oldest daughter welcomed her first child in late April.
“The emotion of becoming a grandparent for the first time is indescribable,” Matlin shared with PEOPLE regarding her granddaughter, Brooklyn. “The love you feel for this child completely overwhelms you in the best way possible.” In December, the Oscar-winning actress joyfully announced her daughter’s pregnancy with a baby girl through a delightful Instagram video.
In the clip, Matlin’s eldest daughter walks by, and the actress then pulls her closer while gently rubbing her growing belly. She signed “It’s a girl” in American Sign Language, adding, “We’ve been promoted to GRANDPARENTS!” in the caption.
