David Foster may be a legendary producer and songwriter, but he’s certainly not above some playful teasing—especially from Josh Groban. In a lighthearted moment, Groban, who once described their bond as a “musical married couple” in an interview with PEOPLE, shared his appreciation for the long-standing creative connection he shares with Foster.
While attending Foster’s 75th birthday celebration at the Hollywood Bowl, Groban spoke to PEOPLE about what it’s been like aging with the celebrated composer.
Laughing, he noted, “He didn’t have any gray hair when we first met. Neither did I!” Their journey began when Foster discovered Groban’s unique voice at just 16, launching his career by having him rehearse as a stand-in for Andrea Bocelli.
Groban, known for hits like “You Raise Me Up,” also reflected on Foster’s impact, remarking on his “extraordinary body of work” and the many artists who have thrived thanks to Foster’s guidance and talent.
Now, Groban also has a new companion to keep him on his toes: a West Highland Terrier named George, joining his family after he had to say goodbye to his longtime dog, Sweeney, in 2020. George, he shared, is “very cute” and already has a penchant for stealing socks.
Foster’s wife, Katharine McPhee, looked back warmly on watching her husband reach such a milestone. McPhee, who recently turned 40, told PEOPLE that both she and Foster embraced these birthdays without worry, noting that they’ve always been “cut from the same cloth” when it comes to growing older.
The Hollywood Bowl celebration for Foster’s birthday brought together a remarkable lineup, including Kristin Chenoweth, Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublé, and Jennifer Hudson. As Foster quipped, the tribute felt “sort of like my funeral while I’m alive.”
